Oklahoma Democrats want special 2nd District vote

Voters in Oklahoma’s sprawling 2nd Congressional District sent a clear message during Tuesday’s general election.

They want incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin — to the tune of 70 percent voter approval — to keep his seat in the U.S. House.

Friday, the chairman of the state’s Democratic Party had a different message to share: They would like a do-over on the election.

Democratic Party Chairman Wallace Collins said he believes state law requires that a special election be called because of the death of Mullin’s Democratic challenger, Earl Everett, 81, two days before the election.

“I believe we’ve got to follow state law,” Collins said.

Everett, a retired schoolteacher and Korean War veteran, died Sunday at a Tulsa hospital after being involved in a two-car accident Friday afternoon in Fort Gibson.
