Sens. Tom Coburn and Mike Lee must stop blocking the National Women’s History Museum

Two Republicans who happen to be men are inexcusably blocking a drive to establish in Washington a National Women’s History Museum that would chronicle the achievements of half the nation.
With overwhelming bipartisan support, Rep. Carolyn Maloney won House passage in May of a measure to establish a privately funded bipartisan commission that would study the museum’s feasibility. A companion bill sponsored by the Senate’s 20 women was teed up for a vote.
Then, playing neatly into Democratic accusations that Republicans are engaged in a war on women, Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Mike Lee of Utah bottled it up. They warn that the museum could turn into a costly boondoggle. Of course they do. That’s what they say about everything they don’t like.
If Coburn and Lee believe that an institution devoted to women’s history has no place in a city overflowing with museums large and small, they should just say so. But they dare not.
