Freda Deskin, founder and chief executive officer of the Advanced Science and Technology Education Charter middle and high schools in Oklahoma City, announced her candidacy Monday.
Deskin, a Democrat, held a morning press conference in Tulsa, and in the afternoon she was joined at an Oklahoma City press conference by her campaign chairwoman, Kim Henry, former first lady of Oklahoma.
Deskin, who called for “authentic, legitimate” school accountability measures that don’t rely solely on students’ standardized tests scores, said she is concerned about serious teacher shortages and “corporate-led reform efforts that will take away our local control of schools.”
The primary election is not until June 24, 2014, but challengers to the re-election campaign of incumbent Janet Barresi now number six.
