John Cox has not been in the education game as long as Freda Deskin and doesn’t have the same name recognition in the state’s largest counties.

But Cox, the soft-spoken leader of a rural school district in northeast Oklahoma, believes he has the experience and grassroots support to become the next state superintendent of public instruction.

“For 20 years, I’ve been a hands-on superintendent, where I’ve actually worked with public school finance and facilities, and child nutrition and transportation,” he said last week. “When people talk to me and ask questions about public schools, I have a true understanding of what they’re actually asking.”

Cox and Deskin face off in Tuesday’s runoff election for the Democratic party nomination.

The winner faces Joy Hofmeister in the Nov. 4 general election. Hofmeister, the Tulsa Republican, beat incumbent Janet Barresi in the June 24 primary.
