State Sen. Brian Crain has been selected to receive the 2013 AARP Oklahoma Legislative Achievement Award. Crain, R-Tulsa, is being recognized for his work this past session on Senate Bill 315.

The legislation expands the basic training required through the Council on Law Enforcement Education Training to include at least two hours of education to help law enforcement officers recognize the symptoms and behaviors of a person with Alzheimer’s and how best to respond to encounters with such individuals.

“This kind of training will help new members of law enforcement to recognize Alzheimer’s so they can they can distinguish between a medical disorder and disorderly conduct,” Crain said. “That understanding can make all the difference in resolving a situation in a positive way.”

The bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin and takes effect on Nov. 1, was requested by the Oklahoma Alzheimer’s Association and was supported by AARP Oklahoma.

“AARP Oklahoma was honored to work with Senator Crain to secure passage of Senate Bill 315 and we commend his leadership on this crucial issue,” said AARP Oklahoma Pres. Marjorie Lyons.
