OKLAHOMA CITY – A bill to let district attorneys collect delinquent sales taxes as a means of offsetting dwindling revenue from bogus-check prosecutions advanced from the House Judiciary Committee late Tuesday.
Senate Bill 865, sponsored by Rep. Anthony Sykes, R-Moore, would allow district attorneys to assess a fee that would vary according to the amount owed and the degree of delinquency, but that could easily total 25 percent plus penalties and interest.
House sponsor Scott Biggs, R-Chickasha, acknowledged that the bill’s primary purpose is to find new sources of operating revenue for district attorneys.
“People just aren’t writing as many checks as they used to,” he said.
