Ziriax: Republicans Outnumber Democrats, Make History

Republican voters outnumber Democrats for first time in Oklahoma history

For the first time in Oklahoma history, voter registration numbers show more Republicans than Democrats.

State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax said Thursday this is part of a longstanding trend in which Democratic ranks have been declining, while Republican numbers have been growing.

“The difference between the two parties is less than one-tenth of 1 percent, less than 4,000,” he said. “So the two parties are very, very close, but it’s the first time Republicans have outnumbered Democrats in the state.”

The Republican Party also dominates Oklahoma elections. Lyndon B. Johnson was the last Democratic presidential candidate favored by Oklahoma voters. The GOP controls the state’s entire congressional delegation, holds every statewide office and is the majority party in the Oklahoma House and Senate.
