TUSKAHOMA – Joe Dorman picked up a hitchhiker after a recent campaign event in Tulsa. The woman got into his Dodge Charger, he said, and promptly forgot where she lived. A drive that was supposed to be three blocks took about 15 minutes.

The Democrat running for governor and his campaign staff couldn’t help but notice that the woman reeked of vodka.

But she was so thankful for the ride that she pledged her vote to Dorman this November. After all, she told them, her voting rights were recently restored after her release from prison, where she’d served time for a stabbing.

Dorman’s campaign director Kendra Horn thought he was joking when he called to relate the story. Most gubernatorial candidates won’t come within a mile of a convicted felon.

Dorman says he’s a different sort of politician.

“The way we’ve treated this campaign is we have nothing to lose,” he said. “We’ve campaigned without regrets, and people appreciate that attitude.”
